Captioning refers to the use of text along with video. One example of captioning are the captions shown on television or during a foreign film. Captions can be closed [can be turned on/off] or open[text is always shown on screen]:

You may be familiar with captions that are displayed on your television set when you watch a film or television program. Generally, these captions are “closed” in that they have to be turned “on” through a menu option on the television or DVD player.[/one_third]

These are “open” in that they are always shown on the screen and do not need to be turned “on”.
